I live in low to middle-cost-of-living area. I am applying to jobs that have a 50k salary band. The middle of the range is 20% what I making. How realistic is to ask for the highest rate?

personally my offers have usually come in right around the midpoint and it's REALLY hard to get them to go to the upper end unless you're a unicorn candidate. sometimes the top of the range is the level cap, meaning you will not get a raise unless you are promoted. so if the midpoint is 20% of what you're currently making, no, i think it's highly unrealistic.

Should have asked when interviewed

I’d check into other opportunities that will fall closer to what you require. As the other poster noted, if the middle of the range is too low it is highly unlikely they’ll move much higher than that. In my experience, landing towards the midrange is more common and you’ll more than likely leave for somewhere else long before even getting close to the high end of the range. Companies nowadays like to keep their doors revolving to avoid developing talent; they just want to hire people with the skills they want right away.

I think it’s reasonable. Rates are based on skills too not just area

Totally realistic, especially if you bring more experience or skills than the role requires. I live in a LCOL area too, and I always aim for the top of the band. Just back it up with results and market data. The worst they’ll say is no, but it sets the bar.

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

When I negotiated my comp, all my discussions were around me being a junior and I only accepted my comp for that reason (would not have accepted if I was step above junior since it was low). Negotiations happened with HR, but my offer letter and documents never mention junior (but I have proof from HR saying I am a junior). How do I approach this with my boss as I’m not sure she’s aware I’m actually technically a junior? Revolving around asking for a move up + raise

For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?

Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

I’ve been verbally offered a position at a new company, but the recruiter insists on getting a verbal acceptance before sending the offer in writing. This person insists on negotiating salary before sending the paperwork. Generic benefits, RSUs, bonus info have been provided; it’s all unofficial.

This is absurd. Am I missing some “new way” of doing things? Your take?

What is the highest percentage increase you have negotiatied for an internal position? Wondering if all companies typically bump 5-10% for the next paygrade range or is there opportunity for 20-30% jumps.

Got an offer for Sr. Financial Analyst for 85k & 10% annual bonus. What's a good counteroffer? I told the recruiter 95k-110k when I first interviewed. This position is 100% remote, headquartered in VA. I live in NYC. Have roughly 2 YOE.

Thanks.
