I moved in-house six months ago, chasing the mythical work-life balance and dreaming of finally having time for hobbies, friends, and sleep. The hours are better, sure, but I didn’t expect to feel this isolated. There’s no team banter, no late-night stories, just endless emails and solo projects. I miss the energy (and honestly, the chaos) of private practice. Has anyone successfully built a sense of community after going in-house, or is this just the tradeoff?

It’s a big shift, and the social structure is totally different. Try joining internal employee groups or networking with other in-house counsel outside your company—it can take time, but the right community is out there.

I was very PT for awhile, and very siloed, and just did all of my socializing outside of work—-book clubs, neighborhood organizations, happy hours, weekday breakfasts and coffee dates, etc.

Totally hear you. I coach lawyers through BetterUp, and this shift comes up a lot. More control, less connection. One thing that helps is designing your own version of team culture. Even if it’s just 1:1 rituals.

This is a big concern for me too. TBH, all of my close friendships have come from me being in forced close proximity with people, e.g. school and work. I have made 0 close friends through things that I voluntarily go to like hobbies and whatnot. Biglaw has actually been great for making friends at work because you’re surrounded by people in your same situation and age, just like school. don’t know if in house would be the same

Why do recruiters seen zone your messages on Linkedin after you ask them for an opportunity to work in their company?

Just say NO, Sorry your skills are not a match, don't ignore. You were also candidates once.

Worse they say We'll check or get back to you. But never come back. Luckily I got selected into a tier-1 company and their Recruiter ignored me once 😂. I am gonna personally meet that recruiter on Day1.

Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. Do I offer 12.5k so we can hopefully meet in the middle at 15k? Is that how the settlement game is played? Seems dumb we can’t just say let’s meet in the middle now and be done with this. (I’m a first year, first time negotiating a settlement on my own and I don’t want to screw this up!)

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
