For all who wonder about the etymology of blackline: apparently the original software was black and white. The only thing it did was make a black line in the left margin where changes had been made. Hence, “black line”. I heard this from a Senior Counsel who loves to reminisce.
When talking with clients I call it a highlighted copy. As a soon-to-be retired Boomer, I call it a blacklined copy when talking to other lawyers. There were no color printers when I first started in the 70s. 😉
People say both. I say redline because I’m young and hip.
Both. Blackline is reserved for debt financing people; for some reason, that’s their preferred lexicon. Redline for everyone else.
Now that you mention it, banks attorneys usually use blackline
It’s “blackline“ in Canada, but when dealing with U.S. counter parties, I use “redline”
Came here to say this
Agree with you all. A couple of the boomers in my office say blackline so I had to put this to rest.
I’ve been in law firms since 2003, and have only ever heard redline. Blackline sounds like code for “clean copy”, I’d stay clear of that word.
Redline - and I’ve been in law since ‘86
What is a black line?
Redline 💯

Redline. Never even heard some say blueline

Redline:))
Redline for the millenials. Black line for the Gen X’ers and above. I don’t know why. At some point in time did people cross out and underline sections by hand in pencil and create a “black line” copy? (If so why not use red pen?)
Maybe, but I clerked first multiple judges and never heard it

It’s either, for the (obvious?) reasons that previous software used to produce changes in BW and put a vertical black line (see what they did there?) in the margin next to the change - so exactly like Word does in track now. I use them pretty interchangeably (redline dominates though); have never had an issue with anyone wondering what “attached are both the clean and blackline versions” could mean.
@C1 It doesn’t have to be pretty to be valid.
I know that Cravath had a proofing dept where people with red wax pencils did it by hand back in the day. When I worked there ~18 years ago, there were only a handful of proofers left, and we had redlining software by then. I'm a young Gen Xer (tail end) and I say redline.
