Sometimes the immediate response can be “Got it. I’m not at my computer right now but will handle in the morning.” Just acknowledge the email and say when you’ll be able to take care of it.
It’s also about learning when you *need* to be doing evening/weekend work (an approaching closing or deadline) and when something can wait (a partner is catching up on emails in the evening and sending out assignments, but they don’t need to be done ASAP)
This^^^ it took time to learn as a junior.
Managing up and down is important. Respond with accurate timing of when you will do things, and then be on time there. If you aren’t available to respond, ask another member of the team if they can respond. Be aware of the different timing dynamics on your team and fill a hole (if a team member has young kids know that they probably try to be with their kids 5-7pm, if a team member is younger they may not be up by 5am, if a partner is older they’re less likely to be online after midnight). If you can’t get used to working some part of your nights and sometimes on weekends - and often having the possibility of such hanging over your head - this might not be the right industry for you.
