I need to find a more sustainable career. Genuinely looking for guidance. I left a v20 big law firm after 7+ years to move to a FAANG as product counsel. I thought the move in house would be an improvement in work life balance but I've found myself working 10-13 hour days constantly, often with weekend work, and under nonstop pressure. It's unsustainable and I need a break desperately. I haven't used a vacation day in over 10 months because I don't feel like I can. No idea where to go.

Are you the issue? Do you know how to stop? Do you have boundaries? Do you enforce them?

If you let them. It ain’t always easy. But boundaries can be enforced.

Book a vacation an tell your manager you’re taking PTO. You’re letting ego tell you that you can’t walk away from work. You can!

Oh well!

Start small by saying you can get to it next week a couple timelines and cite bandwidth. Make the case to your boss why you need help. Ask to get a head to report to you to help out. If they continually refuse then you know that’s the culture and you can just exit — most places won’t work you like this unless maybe a startup? don’t accept it. You set the limit

There are a lot of companies outside of FAANG that need product counsels. As a product counsels myself, i agree things can get really busy depending on the team you support and competition in the market. Try looking for other internal teams to lateral to or other companies. Product counsels are in higher demand imho and it seems like you’ve done well so you should be a competitive candidate. Can’t promise you’ll get paid like FAANG, but fintech, bio/pharma and tech pays close to FAANG sometimes! As others have mentioned, take as much vacation and as frequently as possible and look for other opportunities. Best wishes!

I rarely work more than 9-5. Never on the weekends unless I'm trying to get ahead. Lots of product counsel roles outside of FAANG in tech that pay very well (my tc is 400k+). I'd start looking for another gig

like

yes, it's the norm. not a public company. although previous role was public and i was product counsel there. TC was maybe $350k

Is this a typical experience for Faang? I feel like from what I’ve heard people are able to find great wlb as product counsel at one of these companies although some teams can be busier. Could you switch to another team?

like

Can you try to pivot into M&A/corporate counsel? There's basically no pay cut (you will probably get a raise, if anything), and we farm most of the trench work to outside counsel while preserving visibility in the org.

F100 tech (not FAANG)

My company cut staff to 4 days/wk to save funds. I was getting requests from coworkers for docs needed urgently on our day off (fridays). I would oblige them. But then, I learned that those same coworkers had been put back to 5 days because they were deemed “essential“. I felt foolish and decided to stop working on fridays. One EVP (not the GC) in particular has been aggressively texting/calling me on fridays. How Do I tactfully respond? My out-of-office email is not enough of a hint...

Considering joining a small 50-person company as the only attorney (prior attorney is retiring). (I am currently in-house at a F50). For others who have done the same path, what surprises did you have when moving from a large company to a small one?

For example, it sounds like I should not expect a document management system, based on a prior post in this bowl. I’m guessing expenses like state bar fees and cell phone are not reimbursed.

Any advice on things to expect (or not expect)?

Currently working on a three person team in a larger GC group. I lateraled from a different group that did not pay attorneys on an attorney scale. I’m stuck in my old pay scale but have gotten promotions and raises quickly with more on the horizon. A recruiter reached out with a new role for 2-2.5x more than I currently make doing something similar. I love my company and the people I work with but the money isn’t there. Is it worth trying to get a counter to stay if I get the bigger offer?

What is work-life balance like in big tech legal? I’m currently in house at a large multinational; I like my job and I get paid fine, with a very good WLB (40-45 hrs). I want to look into FAANG-type opportunities as they would mean a huge pay bump, and I think I’m qualified, but I have no idea about the hours, and I don’t want to substantially give up WLB, as that’s why I left BigLaw. There’s also an equity component: 0.15% of current fully diluted equity. This equates to about 30000 shares at a strike price of $2. They also indicate the preferred stock price is $6 and preferred stock equity is $188k (whatever that means). They are in the middle of a new financing and valuation round.

Hello, hoping for some input on how to time a job change. At a startup - we are doing well now but unless we have complete turnover in management I don’t think we have a bright future post-COVID.
