I recently accepted an offer for a summer associate position at a Florida mid-sized full service firm. The compensation is great and the firm seems to value training and mentorship. How can I set myself apart as a summer associate so that I can maximize my chances of getting a return offer at the firm?

Ask the partners and associates to grab coffee and lunch, go to the social events and be responsive/receptive to work. Do all of that and you’ll most likely be fine landing a return offer.

Do good work and be receptive to feedback. No one expects your work product to be perfect as a summer, and if you didn’t have the base level of competency expected, you probably wouldn’t have gotten the job. You want to demonstrate that you are teachable and willing, ready, and able to learn. Ask for feedback and be receptive to it when people take the time to provide it.

Go out of your way to meet and get to know as many people as possible. Make an effort to get to know your potential future colleagues both personally and professionally. Ask thoughtful questions and listen to others. Grabbing coffee/lunch/an after work drink are great ways to get to know folks, but be sure to make an effort to attend the vast majority of any of the summer associate events.

My favorite summer interns were the ones who were curious, engaged, and had a sense of humor. They asked questions that showed they were interested and made an effort to be social. They also came knocking on my door asking if I had any projects for them.

I have two job offers, one offers a salary of 61.5k and the other job offers an hourly rate of $27.65 with $41.48 for OT, as well as Sales Incentive Compensation Plan where the annual target incentive compensation is 42.86%. In other words, I could potentially receive quarterly bonuses that add up to around $24,650. However, that bonus isn’t guaranteed according to the offer letter and is contingent on my and my clients performance. Should I take the first job or second job?

Big Law Dads: How much time do you usually take off when your wife has a baby? And do you actually get to take off, or do you just end up working from home half the time? My wife is due Mid-December, and I’m staffed on 4 M&A deals trying to close by year end, so it’s not looking promising.

I’m my partners only associate and I went on parental leave two weeks ago. I feel horrible for leaving him to handle our cases alone, but am trying to focus on my wife and new baby. I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
