Depends. If you can come up with Cannes winning ideas frequently…who gives a flying crap if you know how to use gradient maps
It seems like whatever technical skills a CD used to have, aren’t utilized as much, at least in the same ways, so they kind of don’t have the same level of skills as others. It’s important to understand how things work, but the CD isn’t really hands on anymore with things.
This for sure. My biggest skill is sitting in meetings.
Sure. And, you can be a CD without management skills, CD without strategy skills, CD without writing skills, etc. You can be a CD with “all the skills” but that does not mean you are any good.
To add, I would hire a CD with strong people management skills over technical skills in a heartbeat. I’ve seen examples of bad managers destroy a team culture way too many times.
All the above. Although in tough times management gets cut first and all the do'ers still have jobs.
Sure, but, after decades in the Biz, I have worked with scores of tech-heads with no real talent, vision, or any soul. Being a CD, a good one anyway, is a truly tough gig. You have to have it all, and then some.
