I am a 6th year making what a second year big law associate makes, but I only go in one day a week (a little over an hour each way door to door) Firms have their trade offs. You need to figure out what is important for you.
Why is it the firm’s fault that you live where you live? Is that the only housing you could find and it happens to be an hour away, by car? You choose where you work. You choose where you live. Why is it your employer’s job to cater to your choices?
cool story - does that change the fact that you pick where you live and you pick where you work and those are not things your employer should make policy decisions based on?
And I’m a gen xer by about two years so there’s that.
Whether you like it or not, your employer believes that there are benefits to you being in the office. Perhaps you might feel differently if you put yourself in their shoes. Alternatively, focus on being so valuable that either (i) you have power to negotiate a better arrangement at your current employer or elsewhere, or (ii) create a book of business that permits you to open your own shop. You can focus on what you don’t have or work on putting yourself in a position to get yourself to where you want to be. Hang in there.
Isn't that what everyone did before the pandemic? Traveling to work Isn't a new thing.
That's a tough commute. Especially when it doesn't feel like there's a huge purpose to being in office. If I were you, I would work to make changes to my work to find something that allows me to have the life I want. Good luck!
I would move closer to my job….commute by bus…or get a different job!
Five days a week in office has no benefit over 3-4 and makes life so much harder. Feel for you OP.
