I started as a cashier thinking it was just a temporary thing. Over time, I got faster, learned how to handle tough customers, and ended up helping train new hires. Eventually, I was promoted to supervisor, which honestly felt like a whole new job. I was scheduling shifts, solving problems, and supporting the team, basically getting a taste of what managers actually do. It gave me real leadership experience I still use now!!

Have you ever grown into a role without even planning to?

Do you guys get paid weekly or bi weekly ?🩷

Biweekly🙂

Yep, the exact same thing happened to me. I planned on getting a temporary job while I finished my degree. I never did finish school, but I got a new career out of it, which is ultimately the goal, right? A lot of people who grow in retail and never planned on it, it kind of just happened, and I think that's awesome.

Honestly, I love that. So many of us start thinking it’s temporary and end up finding something that actually fits. Funny how life works like that.

That is how it happens for a lot of people. You start thinking it is temporary and end up learning leadership, problem solving, and people skills along the way. Some of the best growth comes from just stepping up when something needs to be done.

like

Exactly this. You don’t realize how much you’re learning until you look back and see how much you’ve grown.

Yes, every time I’ve been promoted, I’ve grown into the role. But in my case, it didn’t feel unfamiliar, just like an extension of what I was already doing.

I like that perspective. Promotions aren’t always about change, sometimes they’re just recognition of what’s already there.

I saw some sales managers discussing hiring strategies, especially for entry level roles (e.g. SDR, BDR).

One strategy that came up was having the applicant do 90 minutes of cold calling into real prospects with the hiring manager coaching.

What do you think of this approach? Would be curious to hear from both hiring manager perspectives and from candidate perspectives.
