I also teach 6th grade math. I do a self reflection every Friday. This reflection has topics covered for the week with examples of problems. They tell me what they feel good with and what they need more work with. I also include a question or two on what they can do to improve their study skills, and I ask what suggestions they have for me to improve. This way they can see that we are all working to improve. It does take a long time to teach self reflection though so you really have to model and do a lot of work with it before they get good at it.
Thank you so much! Please let me know if you do. I really appreciate it.
I haven't tried much of this with virtual but probably should! When I've done it in the past, generally speaking, I found many students to be harder on than themselves when self- evaluating than I was on them!
That would be awesome!
My entire math department starts each class with 3-5 "warm up" problems that showcase a previously learned skill that will be needed in an upcoming unit or a skill where a majority of the class struggled with. We call it "math review"Each question assesses the same skill (ex: #1 is always a one step equation solved by multiplication, #2 is always solving a proportion, etc.) for five classes in a row. The sixth class is a quiz. Teacher goes through the first round with students to point out common errors or reminders, and students complete the next four individually, and make corrections using a different color as each student in the class goes over at least one problem throughout the entire math review set. Before the pandemic, I collected the practice rounds to count as part of the quiz grade: 1 point for completing each practice and 1 point for making the corrections.
