AWS cloud application architect. Had an on-site interview with AWS a few days ago and just got an email saying they want to talk to me about next steps. The role is cloud application architect but I want to ask them about the senior cloud application architect role. I have all the relevant experience for that role and feel like I’d be a better fit for that senior role. How should I approach this conversation? Is this even possible? Amazon

You could slap yourself, for listening to them....
JK. Nothing is layoff-proof. I'd agree that cybersecurity is recession proof, as is most of tech (see mid-2021). The "good" news is we're not in a recession anyway. If you have the skills, you'll be able to get a job. It's a bit tough at the moment, while too many companies jump on the "boost our stock value by reducing headcount" bandwagon. When some of them start falling behind b/c they don't have enough engineers to do the work, they'll be singing a different tune. I wish I saw more actual leadership in tech leadership; too many sheep following the other sheep for my taste. Best wishes!
Thank you! This was very reassuring.

Is it not?
No one wants to pay for it until there’s a breach. It’s like a lock in your house. We can ignore about it and think no one wants to break into your house. Sometimes, we even leave the door unlocks.
Then one day, someone breaks in and suddenly, you fear for your life and spend all the money improving it. With companies, it’s not just one lock. There are millions of them. And someone is always looking for entry, especially if you are rich.
Did they get you?
Yeah its not recession proof and there is abundant supply
So who was it that told you that? 🤣
EY didn’t you know, SEs do not exist in reality. 🤣
There is no such thing as a recession-proof job. EVERYONE is impacted by a recession, some moreso than others. (You should slap yourself for believing it.)
Now what you CAN do to improve your chances of dodging the layoff bullet, is to make sure:
1. You are (and most importantly, are PERCEIVED TO BE) adding value to the organization by the Powers-that-Be.
I'm not saying be a brown-noser/kiss-ass. I'm saying, add VALUE. Maybe "value" is being a subject matter expect who can SHARE their knowledge (not hoarde it). Become the resident problem-solver NOT by knowing the answer, but by knowing who to bring together to help SOLVE the problem.
2. You are well-connected in your organization. Your name is known/familiar. Diversify your skill set and demonstrate it.
3. You HAVE TO pay attention to your surroundings. Observe things. Know what's going on in the world, in your state, in your city, in your industry/market, and most importantly --what's going on in your company.
THESE things will HELP --but can't guarantee-- you will survive the next recession cycle.
