Is it too late to become an astronaut?
Cisco interviewed me for 3 months for a couple of roles and then offered me comp that is considerably less than my current comp for a product manager role!! They also said its cisco policy to not offer rsu for mcol cities. Rsu is apparently only meant for candidates in hcol cities.
Need to punch a bag every day for several days to get over this bs.

- 8 years of experience is closer to an L5 at Google
- If you're aiming higher, you'll need very specific domain expertise that is valuable to Google
- Google has slowed down hiring since covid19
Finally, network with people on your target teams before you apply for a role so that you have a more tailored application. Tap into ex McKinsey network
Job description only lists minimum requirements. And considering everyone with that experience will apply, you need to apply down to stand out.
I have 18 years of experience and am same level as OP. I did not apply formally but getting more than L7 at google would be almost impossible unless you are a partner. And then too your functional expertise has to match spot-on.
Dang I would’ve thought McK would be auto interview at least

I worked for bcg and currently work for Facebook, went to a selective school - I’ve never had as much trouble as getting into google. I interviewed seven freaking times (on site) and was never able to get pass the hiring committee. Google hiring is a mystery.
I will say though the ones that got in were very interesting choices - I’ve worked with a few and most of them were mediocre at best, two were managed out. Maybe google saw something in them that I didn’t.
Why would you leave, you are an AP probably making partner soon...with a potential to make crazy money

If you discover the secret, please tell me also. I think I will die waiting for google and a green card both
I moved from McK to Google last year. L7 external hiring is almost impossible below Partner. I’d suggest targeting a L6.
My friends?
There are other companies, you know?
I’m on op’s side here - google is the epitome of “rest and vest”
Google is well-known for downleveling. I know EMs that came is as L5s.
Have you considered applying for L6 roles?
Also, how many years of experience do you have? Tech cares about YOE more than other industries, so someone who went straight from undergrad to AP likely will not have enough years to come in at a high level.
I have 8 yoe. I know of folks who have managed to get L7 from my level, god knows what’s so off putting about my resume. It’s a huge bummer to not even clear the auto resume screener
I feel like people are mixing up the levels for SWE / PMs and strategy / ops. L5 for SWE is about equivalent to L7 for biz ops at google so OP is applying at the right level
Not true.
What’s the relative difference in TC between L5-7?
I moved over from Monitor Deloitte at L5 - EM with 10 yoe - ~300k. Things have changed from about 3-4 years ago. Most EMs would have gotten in at L5/L6 and APs at L6/L7. Google now plays hardball. So expect a level down

Lmk if you see anything at FB :)
You'd be an L5, maybe L6.
What is your work experience and what sort of roles are you applying to?
Separately on your resume are you using the XYZ method google seem to love? Limiting it to one page etc?
I mean I’m used to a certain kind of lifestyle and work, can’t take a 3-year go back, not that desperate
The person who referred you- did they give you any pointers? I feel like they would know the best
They went silent..
Can we exchange jobs?
Yes I do, and I am ready to join the sweat shop for lesser pay DM me if you are serious
Op- you are shooting too high! G rarely higher someone from outside at L7; esp someone from consulting. I would highly recommending going for L5/L6.
