What are the consequences of being 'caught' faking a competitive offer to negotiate a higher TC at companies like Google? Not sure how one would get caught (pretend offer is non-FAANG). Am I missing something here?

If you want more money, toughen up and ask for more money. No need to lie about another offer.

Ah my bad, I must be mistaken. Had heard that from a couple SWE friends who tried and failed to negotiate w/o offers.

They could ask to see the offer. Someone on the hiring team could have contacts at that company. Frankly, the truth always comes out one way or another. Maybe not right away, but eventually. “If” you were caught lying I’d imagine you would be terminated (if already hired) or offer rescinded. I don’t think “faking” anything is a smart move.

When you are internal and play the "i'm leaving game" - they usually ask to see the other offer before accepting.

sometimes the same thing happens for new hires

It had to be McKinsey asking such a question

Not at Google but my company didn’t ask for proof. They just gave me a promotion, bumped my
comp, no questions asked lol.

How would you get caught? Play your cards right

likehelpful

Probably hard to get caught - but I’d fire you immediately because I don’t want someone lacking moral fiber working for me. YMMV.

smartfunny

Google will often ask for proof of offer + recruiters generally know pay bands at other well known companies. If you fake documentation then they’ll probably blacklist you. If you verbally fake it then they’ll probably just reject it

likehelpful

There’s nothing like “faking” a competitive offer in my mind, as long you are not literally forging documents. You quote whatever you want as your TC, and it can be anchored to the competing offer / current TC or it can be pulled from thin air.

If you want to be paid $300K TC, ask for it. Say “I’m sharing my TC expectation below.”. If required, pad it up with “this figure is based on my current TC / competing offers”. Don’t fake documents.

likehelpful

Don’t do it. Google knows exactly what other companies offer, and if you fabricate something implausible then you risk losing the role completely.

The risk isn’t worth an extra 10%. Take the job as-is and congrats

helpful

Seriously - Google has already searched your email, your search history and your purchasing history. They know whether you have a competing offer or not.

Of course McKinsey would be the one to ask this 😈😈😈. Just like that guy googled “what are the consequences of insider trading”.

funny

Not planning on doing it, just wondering why people wouldn't do it. So much presumptuous judgment on this thread, sheesh.

funny

I am assuming no default, just a range of behavior. You'd be naive not to.

Honestly, depends. I’m a HM in tech, once in a while we ask for documentation when the asks get outrageous. If it seems consistent with our market intelligence we don’t care that much.

To add we’ve caught 2 mbb candidates like this, we weren’t that vindictive but we could’ve totally gone back to their current employer and made things rough for them (mbb is much much smaller world than people think it is).
