I watched a coworker completely ignore hand hygiene after leaving a room, and I know they do it a lot. When you have a colleague who is always skipping important steps like this, do you confront them? I hate confrontation, but this is a safety issue.

I hate seeing stuff like that, it honestly grosses me out because of the field we are in. I have no problem saying something politely to a colleague. I would pull them aside and just ask them to wash their hands.

You’re not wrong to be bothered by it. Skipping hand hygiene isn’t a personality quirk, it’s a safety issue. I’d try a gentle reminder first, but if it’s a pattern and they keep ignoring it, I’d loop in a charge nurse. It’s not snitching, it’s basic patient care.

Comforting others:
When someone tells me bad news regarding their health, I say everything I am supposed to say (I’m sorry to hear that, I’m here for you, etc) EXCEPT “everything is going to be ok”. Because I can’t guarantee that and I really don’t know if everything is going to be ok. I was taken aback recently when a friend told me I am calloused and cold-hearted for not being able to say those words. Is she right? Should I start saying this for the purposes of providing comfort only??
