I do that first until I get a response. Reason is in case you have your little teams “pop up” in front of another client or individual, they don’t see the ask.
If you just say “hi” I’m not responding because I assume you’re already composing your next message.
Agreed hate that
I typically just leave those unread. If you really want to talk, tell me what you need.
Honestly, yeah - "Sounds good, calendar is up to date or just let me know what you need."
There is a special place in hell for people that do it.
I had a manager that would send out ‘hi’ on a specific interval, he then would record if you responded and how long it took. He also did this for his superiors and judged his effectiveness if they would reply to him. I was talking to the lead dba and he showed me a screen of 20-30 hi’s over the last month that he never replied to.
To check if you’re online
I ignore until there’s a follow up
Maybe they are alone and need attention? I would use empathy.

They want you to respond. People used to say yt?
It's generally considered bad form in the US (https://www.huffpost.com/entry/hey-hanging-work-chat_l_64c9387ae4b0fd06594dd491), but I've noticed it depends on the culture of the sender. Very common for my offshore folks to do this, thinking it's polite. Me, I want to know what you want, even if i can't get to it right now. With technology these days, it's very easy to have settings that block details from popping up on someone's screen if they're presenting, for example. When I have newbies on my team, I teach them this right away.
In those cases I just answer with “Ok”.
