Hello,

Currently, in accenture. I have had very bad billable hours and not much achievement this fiscal year. I am worried of getting fired, so i applied for another job. Got offered may be 5% above my current pay with 5k bonus, but in lower level at Deloitte. I think working lower level will give me more opportunities to learn as i think i have lot to learn. I made decision based on my gut and accepted the offer. I have not talked to anyone on accenture side yet. What you think?

I think you probably made a good call. You sound very self-aware. I hope you learn and grow at Deloitte as you intend.

Agree with M1. I’d like more time to learn

This is probably one of the most realistic posts I’ve ever read on here. Good luck on the new journey!

Thanks... hope, i made a good choice coming to Deloitte.

Thank you

Take some time to seriously reflect on what went wrong at Accenture and try not to make the same mistakes or get into the same situations at Deloitte. Deloitte will fire you too for low chargeability and underperformance, and you don't want to be in the same situation 6 or 12 months from now.

like

Yes indeed. Definitely learning from my tenure in Accenture, so that i am better in my new firm.

What level are you at? I can understand going back a level if you at least are making more money, but some levels are harder to jump up to. If you really think they will terminate you, then get out before they do. I can say that Deloitte is one of the more aggressive companies I've seen for getting rid of people on the bench.

I was there for some time (5+ years) and I was normally billing at 100%+. If in between gigs I was on the bench for more than a few weeks, I began to worry. I saw similar people terminated and we were all solid performers in general. Just be careful you aren't jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Maybe see what other options you can find if you have time, if not bail before the hammer falls.

like

Currently, level 9 and will be working as analyst in Deloitte. I hope it is not hard to jump to consultant in Deloitte. Like i mentioned, i am making based on my gut. I have 60% chargeability which is terrible. So, i see more probability of getting fired

like

If you think it will benefit you & your career then go for it. Sounds like you know what you want & where you can grow. Good for you taking control of your career & destiny!

like

Thanks s lot

Level 9 at Accenture (the post mba level) to analyst at Deloitte (which I think is the post undergrad level) is a ridiculous step down in title. I wouldn't do it. And 60% isn't so bad (by itself) that you'll be fired in the next few weeks I think you have more runway to find a comparable senior consultant or senior associate role elsewhere in big 4.

I’m doing the same in an industry job. Sometimes it’s good to start over and you seem to understand you’re under performing a bit. I think working online has made a lot of learning super confusing - something that’s much simpler by being in the office. And Accenture is not a bad company at all. With the world moving to tech and tech jobs even within consulting firms getting paid much more I think you made a good move. Good luck to you!

like

Yes indeed. Sometime you have to acknowledge your weakness and improve on it. Accenture is very good company and learned a lot. But, i have to protect myself in the end and start fresh

like

Sounds like a great opportunity with a silver lining. More people should be this reflective. Kudos to you for taking a leap. It may be a step back for now, but in the long run it will make you a better professional. Wishing you the best!

like

Sounds like a fresh start. I think you have a great opportunity to grow in this new role. Good choice. And good luck!

Good luck. Curious though as the bench right now is generally very low...do you think you've had low chargability because of poor feedback?

No, i have not received any poor feedback. There was some miscommunication in the beginning during resource allocation. And also i was not able to find project that i was interested in.

You haven’t shared what feedback you’ve received, whether you think you can adjust to meet expectations, etc. Honestly I have no idea what I would recommend with such little information.

I have 100% utilization every year. You have to align yourself with a high demand, difficult to staff product. You should be dying all the time. If you’re not working 40% of the time there is something wrong with the demand for your particular skills and you need to research more to see what is in demand and skill up. Ask your resource managers what skills are in demand and always billable.

I was in a similar situation, saw the writing on the wall and didn’t get out in time. So yes, great that you are being proactive and I say go for the new position.
In my situation I couldn’t affect my billable hours, so I didn’t look at it as underperformance or something I could control. Is that your case as well? Curious whether you could have done something differently or if it was similar to my case. (That is I’m generally curious how someone could affect this.)

Don’t take a lower title. Try another big 4 same title. A new firm will set you back more than 1 year believe me.

You're smart to dodge a bullet. As consultants, we're contractors at the end of the day and should never get comfortable working at any consulting firm the same way employees become lifers in industry. Also once you get promoted, you can just use your current title on your resume anyway so it won't look like you left for a lower position.

So i have been fortunate that i have managed to go through my career without the need for a degree. I was lucky enough to have been hired by one of the worlds top consulting firms, worked with a whole lot of big clients and travelled a lot. It's gotten to the point where I am not even asked about the lack of a degree on my resume. Personally though, it bothers me. I have a whole bunch of certifications in my industry…but just no formal degree. (cont'd)

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
