To ball park;
- Take your annual salary ($80k)
- Increase this by 30-50% to accommodate: payroll taxes, benefits, paid time off, other overhead costs of being freelance (computer, home office, etc). If the company is providing computer, office space, paying payroll taxes go with 30%. If not, go with 50%.
- divide this number by approx 1500 billable hours
= freelance rate:
Eg: 80,000 x1.5 =120,00 / 1,500 =80/hr

The day rate vs hourly rate topic:
If you do an hourly ( which many companies require) - try to build in a “minimum ” 4 hours a day and make sure it is clear all “wait /on call time” is billable. And all “in office” is billable.
This is to make sure you’re compensated appropriately if you have say - just a 1 hour call on a Friday afternoon, or they ask you to make your self-available and then aren’t needed.
This except do a minimum of 8 hours.
How much do you want? Ask for that.
