If PI work is feast or famine, just how good is the feast and how bad is the famine? I am thinking about moving from construction law to a very reputable plaintiff’s firm.

Firm I was looking starts you out at 90k base for young associates, with 40% on originations and 10% on files the firm gave you. Very reputable, gets lots of cases, and high settlements. Everyone’s making like a quarter million a year

like

That’s a fantastic pay structure. Most firms I’ve dealt with give 1/3 origination on attorneys fees & 1-5% on cases given by the firm.

Every firm is different. It totally depends on your comp structure. The feast or famine mentality more so has to do with people that own their own firm or if their compensation is heavily commission based. For example, I know a PI attorney that gets a high base salary but very low commissions/bonuses. As such, this doesn’t really apply to him, especially since the firm does well.

I have never heard this phrase before but I woud say this is pretty accurate. The firm I work for makes SOOOO much money every year in attorneys fees but of course they had to work up to that and there is only two of them here. They defintiely had some years of struggling to build their networks and referral sources.

I’m a 3rd year Associate at a fairly large injury firm. In my 2nd year my individual fees were $550k, this year I’ll eclipse $800k and next year I have $1.5mm or more lined up. (That’s just cases I signed/closed myself)
I’m the sole associate in the office, and also handle most of the training/marketing/networking in my office. My salary isn’t 6 figures and no performance incentive. At what point is it fair to ask/is it unrealistic or unreasonable to ask for some small performance incentive?

What’s a good LA or NY business litigation firm and salary to expect? I’m a 2yr with quite frankly a lot of experience across civ rights, PI, excessive force, wrongful death, employment defense, K dispute, corp. structure dispute, professional licensure. Write every kind of brief, appeals, argue motions, take depos. Am the only associate working directly under partner on all cases. In house or M&A/Real Estate Transactional are likely the end goal but want to get the litigation out of me first.

I give my cell phone to all clients routinely. However, there are always 1 to 2 clients who abuse this and it seems as soon as their cases are over I find a new one and it is making me rethink. I hate to do this because 98% do not abuse it and I like being connected to my people. Thoughts??

I currently work at a small PI firm in Atlanta were EVERYTHING is settled presuit. If we’re unable to settle, then it’s referred to another firm for litigation. This whole process seems very atypical to me and the attorneys rarely touch a file until the first liability offer is received. The paralegals handle everything from intake to drafting the demands. The attorney briefly skims (does NOT read) the demand packages and signs. Is this ethical?? Anyone else work at a firm that is run this way??

Hi everyone - I'm contemplating an offer from a large PI firm. I'm a little more than halfway through completing my 2nd year of practice, and I'm currently at a small firm with a low salary that's just no longer cutting it.

The offer from the large firm is for a pre-suit position, base salary of $100K - is this salary pretty standard for this kind of position?

Any insight is appreciated, thank you!!
