Sort of. For those in the thick of awards—a lot of programs have stopped. A lot of programs have cropped up. Ascential—which owns Cannes has gobbled up WARC + Contagious…so there is some of that happening…
They are non-profit for tax purposes. They rake in shit tons of money, pretend they’re committed to industry education, diversity, etc., and are able to pay their teams real salaries that would be the envy of most account supervisors and senior art directors.

Most of the work that wins awards is just us congratulating each other on doing things we think are interesting. Most of it doesn’t move the needle for the client at all. I remember a few years ago when Arthur pulled us out of all Awards for a year. It was the year they were building Marcel. We didn’t have enough money to build Marcel and enter the awards.

You pay for award entries with your own money?
I mean the One Club did merge the Art Directors Club and Type Directors Club plus a couple of international orgs in the past 10 years. And beyond that, I’m not sure that “rigged” is the right way to describe them when the paid administration of awards is the express nature of their operations and nearly all of them are utilizing peer-driven juries.
