If you don’t like your career is it worth it to stay until you get promoted to manager in 1-2 years or better to start looking for something else even if it pays less?

The practical answer is to get promoted & look for something better.

The idealist answer is find a path you really want. And make it happen.

No one can decide but you.

Is the promotion really gonna help if you’re planning to change careers?

2 years is alot! 1 year is fine with this economy

like

Those 2 years could be more effective in what you want to do long term. Coming back and with relevant experience, no one would hold you back because you didn't make manager.

When people ask things like this, I always ask why it has to be an either / or in their minds — why not do both? Work on changing your career and figuring out a new opportunity or new path by focusing on that for 30 min - 1 hour a day while you are still working at your current role?

like

Find what makes you happy, waiting for promotion and be naive it will happen in a year or two is not guaranteed or wise. Some people working with 10 years and not get promoted. And even even when you get promoted, where is the guarantee you will be happy in that company? Start looking for something else that fits you better

Getting the promotion is nice but I'd rather spend some time at the salary level so I can save some serious money.

No. Next question.

Yes. Next question.

Probably counter productive, actually. There are few roles that you could step into that would pay equivalently at the same title, so when you try to exit as a manager, you either end up A) locked into consulting after all or B) taking a step down in rank.

Currently in the process of doing that, now been a Manager for the past year and I wish I had tried to lateral as a high-level senior. You won’t get much more additional experience as a Manager that I think is worth putting off getting that functional experience in industry. With consulting experience you’ll probably be able to swing getting a Finance Manager or high-level senior analyst role that is about as lateral as you can get. Don’t wait, get that functional experience early.

If you don’t like your career is it worth the mental tax that comes with staying? I wouldn’t say so. Yes a promotion is fabulous and comes with its benefits but at what cost.
