If you grew up poor/lower middle class, what’s something that you have or now can do that makes you feel rich? A colleague said being able to purchase more than one box of name brand cereal.

Yeah this is a big one

Not having a budget but somehow meeting all the financial goals and being on track with retirement

Somehow it works. I know you’re intentional about your finances

Having to not think before buying groceries or clothes. Knowing that I don't have to borrow money at the end of the month. Knowing that I don't owe any money to anyone.

That’s a real sign these days. The grocery store is so expensive now

Affording a new or nice used car. Growing up, "new to us" cars had like 80,000+ miles on them. That was the best we could afford

Taking vacations that aren’t determined by where we have relatives with extra space in their homes for us to crash in. When I was younger, I thought it was because we loved visiting family. As I grew up, I realized it was because hotels are expensive and while visiting family is always good and fun, the real reason was free housing. Now I’m top tier lifetime status at multiple hotel chains and my young kids always get confused when our hotel room is only “one room”. They also always ask the front desk where the lounge/club is when we check in. We still visit family, but we almost always stay in hotels. The exceptions are where we have family that have done well and have their own guest housing.

like

I have always felt that when you travel you should have enough money for a hotel room. Unless otherwise stated, don’t lodge with family because it can be difficult. Congrats on being a hotel aficionado

A good friend and colleague said being able to buy real milk. He grew up so poor that they had powdered milk in the house. That one has always stayed with me and I remember it at times when I am feeling ungrateful.

You’re right, perspective is key. people of a certain generation will remember powder milk.

The ability for my wife to not work.

My wife and I both grew up very poor. Like trailers and the food bank type of poor. I make a lot of money now, but it’s been hard to adapt our lifelong learned mentality of feeling like we never have enough money. We worked really hard over the last year to define what we want and determined my wife stepping away from work to focus on family and just really her happiness is a luxury we can afford.

We obviously increased our spending throughout the years and have some nice “stuff” (though everything is lagging a few tiers behind our actual income) but this was just such a massive switch in our brains.

This is great actually. It really shows the love you have as a husband toward your wife. Not only that, but to go from a 2 income house to a one income house is a big difference. Speaks to the diligence you all have shown over the years

Then today I got a check from the company In the mail to setup my home office, and it’s signed by someone I’ve never met before or heard of…?
