I’m 30yo making $125k base plus 40% bonus target, which equates to $175k total comp gross. I feel like I should be happy/satisfied but it feels like all my peers who work in finance/consulting earn more, and especially at Google I feel like a super low earner compared to others. I know comparison is the thief of joy but it’s hard not to!

Comparison is truly the thief of joy. Most people will never achieve that level of compensation. At the end of the day, what you are paid is not what you are worth. There is so much more to focus on than this.

It’s too easy to fall into this trap. Keep in mind most of the world would love your salary and position and you’re doing well enough to live a happy life. You could make $500k a year and still feel way under where you should be - there’s no end point in this fame

What’s your role?

like

In the sales org as a product specialist. Non sales org earns more on average, eg more technical roles, especially in terms of equity. I’m seeing/hearing other roles at the same level getting $50-$125k stock refreshers and I got about $25k

This hits home. I’m the same age as you and make about $200k total. Know for a fact new hires on the team are coming in at $30-50k higher.

How long have you been at Google? My advice would be to job hop every 2-3 years. Our industry penalizes us for staying someplace for too long.

like

Yeah the market is brutal right now.

Google is a great place to work, so it makes sense why you’d prioritize staying.

Is Google hiring remote or are they focused on hybrid now?

like

Relatable. I just have to remind myself I make good money and I'm not willing to do what it takes to level up so I guess I'd better learn to be content.

Thanks for all the positive and reassuring comments! I live a very happy life that I’m extremely grateful for and recognize I’m in a position many others aren’t in. Champagne problems as they say, I suppose

like

Sometimes it’s good to remind yourself that you’re doing great! And trust me, you’re crushing it!

nice bonus man, also keep in mind companies like Google are aggressively cutting staff and investing in AI. most highly paid professionals are paper pushers

Most people would be thrilled to be in your shoes. Not to sound like a Polly Anna, but compared to where you were before and compared to a ton of people worse off than you, you're a superstar! Look down not, up and you'll see how blessed you really are. Perspective can help, and a good attitude will help you do better work, and who knows get that golden ring you're seeking? Good luck, you lucky guy!

Appreciate it! That is a good outlook to have. I am definitely very appreciative and aware of the good fortune I’ve had in life. Comparison truly is the thief of joy

Heyy does anyone have any tips for an entry level media planner? I graduated last year and landed a FT offer at an agency. I’ve been working from home for almost a month now and honestly it has its pros and cons. Not only is it harder getting to know your team, but there haven’t been much guidance from my manager and the lingo takes some time to get use to. I guess I just want to learn as much as possible and give off good impressions. Since everything is wfh I’ve been feeling anxious. Thanks!

Hey all! I have an interview with
Deloitte in Regulatory Risk and more precisely in their Investment Management Services team. I would like to know if anyone
knows what the job entails exactly. I keep hearing about people "fooled" into taking a job in risk advisory thinking it'll really be advisory while they only end up doing IT and Audit support (which I do not want to do).
Is it the case here?
Thanks!
