Ask to see if your agency or planning team has a glossary of important terms! If not, offer to build one yourself and start writing down terms you hear often and didn’t know when you joined and ask others ones they are think are important. This is something that other new hires will find useful moving forward.
Yes, also don’t be shy to ask questions and even ask to connect with peers on other accounts and more senior people on your account. Reach out with “I’m hoping to get a better understanding of the business, can I put 30 on your calendar?” Maybe not everyone will say yes, but the helpful ones will.
Ask ALL OF THE QUESTIONS!!! Your team should understand you are brand new and should be expecting you to ask a lot of questions. That said, if you ask - write it down! A big pain point I’ve found with any new person (even senior members) is asking questions multiple time without retention.
Additionally something I’ve found is that a lot of agencies have bad onboarding at all levels but they want to improve. As a new hire, definitely take note on documents, trainings, or resources you would find helpful and share those with your senior leaders. (Think supervisor + as they should be the ones planning your onboarding).
At this stage in my career, I’m director level and am still asking so many questions on acronyms, processes, etc. when I start a new job so don’t feel alone! We are all ALWAYS learning.
Good luck!
Set a weekly meeting with your direct manager so you always have time set aside for questions/expectation setting. Look into certifications that align with your role - Google has several free courses and certifications for paid search and display, The Trade Desk has free online courses related to programmatic, etc. If you can figure it out on your own, do it! Don’t be shy when it comes to self education, but remember your team is a resource if you get stuck or need extra guidance.
If you are ever open to transitioning to on-site Media Planning DISH has opportunities in both LA and Chicago.
In regards to your post, as a WFH individual, I am constantly asking questions. We have mentors which are very helpful. If this is not offered reach out to someone whom you feel comfortable with and ask if they can mentor you, set clear expectations, like a 15 or 30 min chat a week, how much time they can offer you, and can you ping them if you have questions, etc. Hopefully, that helps.
