Is this a non profit or something? Might be understandable if it’s like at a university and you get great healthcare and free tuition benefits that you’re going to use (for you or kids etc). Otherwise that’s way low.
Yes negotiate - every single time
$65k for a CPA with 4 YOE is offensive. Who is this employer so we can avoid?
Important questions
1. How much you make right now?
2. Why you wanna leave current job?
3. Are there any other benefits included in offer? Such has bonus, equity, etc?
To answer your question, you should always be ready to negotiate but it’s different when negotiating 90 to100K vs 65 to 100K.
I'd recommend negotiating--never hurts to ask for reasonable salary. But I'm confused as to how you got to this point of being surprised by the offer. Did they discuss salary range during the process? Are they bringing you in at a different level than expected? $65K is entry level comp in my area, and even a bit low for entry level staff accountants. B4 here is starting people at $70K or more. I'd be embarrassed to offer someone with 4 years experience that salary unless they were switching service lines or widely different niches (even then, it's still low).
My team always discusses salary during the first call and we advertise our salary ranges. There have been times when someone applies for Senior or Manager, but their skills don't align with our competency expectations for the level they're targeting (discovered during interviews). In those cases, we've offered lower levels with lower comp but were able to explain the decision and explain what the person would need to demonstrate for promotion.
unless you’re in a low cost of living city a CPA with 4 years of experience like yourself should receive a better offer then that in my opinion
Unless they have killer benefits, I feel like that maybe the starting salary for someone at Big 4. That’s very low to me.
Maybe in LCOL but 65k is peanuts regardless
Agree!! I live in Arkansas and the starting salary for big 4 staff 1 here was $61K in 2022 for a bachelors degree/masters degree and no license. In industry, it’s 2-3k more. I can’t imagine any companies in other states offering less than that unless maybe Mississippi.
My colleagues and I who started as an Associate in October were offered $63,500. We all have at least three years of experience. No negotiations allowed and no signing bonus.
I started at 63k 5 years ago.
You need to negotiate. That 65K salary is for an entry level staff accountant and sometimes AR/AP accountants. You didn’t do all that work to make an entry level salary.
