I’m a female IB analyst, used to work in a boutique and just joined a BB. Before, I had easy access to all my superiors from Associate to MD. My MD was very close to me, I would brief him on news, go to clients meetings/lunches, write some of his emails, lead calls with clients on occasion, etc. In the new firm, the MDs don’t even look at anyone below VP level…You’re inexistent for them. You’re staffed either by Analyst 2/3 or Associate. How would you deal with that ?

No one cares about your opinion until you’re vp. You need to do what vp and assoc say because they will have the biggest input into your review

That's just what it means to work at a large organization. I wouldn't take it personally. If you don't like it, you can always leave and go back to somewhere smaller

like

That’s pretty typical at larger organisations. It really depends on the person - I don’t see titles when I talk to people but unfortunately a lot do

Yeah this is kind of the only life I've ever known in IB. I haven't worked at any small or boutique organizations so I am pretty used to being invisible at my big company. I think it would take a lot to change the culture around this, I kind of doubt if it's even possible

Some organizations have a flat hierarchy and some don’t.

You can’t. That’s the problem. Does not matter male or female. It’s the normal in larger banks.

Any in-house antitrust counsel willing to offer up some advice? I just started in a firm's well-regarded antitrust group. What do I do over the next few years to make myself most marketable to move in-house? And when is that move actually feasible/ideal for antitrust specialists?

Seems like I can pull work from the whole discipline (merger clearance, civil lit, criminal) — should I spread myself across all of it to maximize my skillset/marketability?

All thoughts and advice welcome. TYSM :)

Asking for wife who's also in banking. If she got ~$100k in signing bonus in 2019 for 1 year commitment in CA and started FT in July 2020, assuming she leaves before July 2021, can her employer claw back full amount in California? Some say it's much tougher to do so under CA law but wonder if anyone has any insights. Banks won't likely care about analyst signing bonuses, but associate bonus at EB with diversity bonus can be significant. If she quits before, she won't be going to another bank.
