I’m a first year in structured finance and want to switch groups (to another type of finance), but my firm won’t let me. Any advice on how to lateral?

I'd recommend contacting a recruiter who will tell you which groups are actively hiring and which groups are open to practice pivots. If you're interested in leveraged or fund finance, I can tell you which firms may be open if you send me an DM.

Finance is really active right now. Generally, I’d advise to stick it out at your firm for a little longer, to show a track record on your resume, but I know of a few top firms which would be interested in first years.
Happy to connect and either see how I can help or just share some firm ideas with you based on your interest and location. DM me.

Not a recruiter but have lateraled in finance a couple of times over the years - happy to pass down any knowledge that would be helpful; feel free to DM.

Were growing our finance groups and our first years can rotate between them to see what they like. If youre interesting in coming over hmu for a referral

Why switch? This practice gets fun after 2-3 years

Just not interested in the substance of the work, and much more interested in the other type of finance

Are you that extremely competent first year who’s on all of my deals? If so I’m gonna need a crying break.

Damn, you got me

Nope, this is your life now so pay attention and learn instead of looking for a way out (this is what I wish I could go back and say to my junior structured finance associate self)

Low billable, low pressure work in privacy law? Slowly realizing that as my boys get older, the money isn’t worth what I’m missing out on. Currently a tech litigation associate with lots of hearing, depo and trial experience (I’ve appeared on my own at hearings/depos) at a well respected firm. I have limited privacy experience despite being hired for that reason… Have my CIPM and CIPP/US /E and /C. Remote preferred; hubs is pilot with cool intl transfer opportunities. Money isn’t issue.

I’ve made it 5+ years in a NY M&A practice and have consistent exceeding expectations reviews. I’ve had a few mental breakdowns because of work during this time, but thankfully made it through.
