Find a job closer to home. When you're starting out in litigation, 8-10 hour days isn't unusual but it gets better. Spending that much of your daily life commuting is the problem
It’s not. I did it! And eventually I could afford my own apartment. And now I own a house. It’s not that onerous and life moves quickly
That is a pretty dismal salary - if you live anywhere near Philadelpia and PI really interests you, it may be worthwhile to see what opportunities exist for you there even at this early stage. Lots of big injury firms there, with major cases and boatloads of cash, thanks to that area being a desirable venue for plaintiffs.
Not sure what requirements are for an NY barred attorney to lateral in, especially in your first year, but it is a MUCH lower COL than NYC and probably a less oppressive commute. Sure, not the metropolis that NYC is, but if you maintain your NY bar admission you’ll always have the option to come back to the big city once you’re more established - and you may not even need a roommate to do so.

Jesus that sounds like an awful deal. Do you have a decent commission % at least?
Yeah, its okay. Its only been 3 months so I haven’t seen anything yet (ofcourse). Going to tough it out but how do I establish a boundary so this doesn’t turn into exploitation

Where are you commuting from? As a second year PI attorney at a small firm on Long Island, I got $85k base and 2% settlement commissions (not including 1/3 of the attorneys fee for cases that originated with me) with normal working hours. Might be worth your time to explore opportunities closer to where you live.
That commute is wayyy to long. You must be able to work closer to home. Or move closer to the office. 10-11 hour days are too long also
Are other PI associates really putting in less than 10 hour days? What am I doing wrong??
Assoc 2 - yes and no; even if I wasn’t it just feels like I need that much time to get the work done! I just need to get more efficient I suppose 🤷♂️
What do your caseloads look like? I’ve got 22 cases, 12 of which are MMPs, a catastrophic injury matter, 8 MVAs and general PI, and a handful of post-settlement matters (liens and probate court approval). Just about all of these I’m handling solo.
Salary in PI is often low. Do you get a referral fee for bringing in business?
You’re absolutely right. Thanks for the advice
Same field, same city - sounds familiar. They do expect you to go out there and hustle. But honestly how many people do you know get hurt every day majorly to become a case that you can take a fee? Sucks about the long hours. I'm a little more flexible except when it comes down to appearances, motions or depositions and the like
Somewhere similar - actually it was lower after I came in after law school during the pandemic, but got bumped when I crossed over
I live in Brooklyn and commute to my firm in another part of Brooklyn. 3 trains and 1 bus (fastest route). Typical travel time is 1.5 hours. Its brutal in addition to the hours I am already working
Wow. That is a really long day. I am so sorry you are experiencing that.
