In this market experience is king. Put "freelancer" on your resume and describe the different projects you've worked on. You don't need to disclose whether or not you were paid unless they ask. The great thing about being a freelancer is it's open-ended and can be anything you want it to be. On paper it looks like work experience but there's really no way for an employer to verify your employment status. It might be enough get your foot in the door for a conversation.

If you have anyone who can refer you go that route. I worked with a senior engineer who never went to university and was self taught, he was just a beast and had a friend vouch for him and he’s been in tech over a decade.
Give up. I hate to bust your bubble, but there are people with years of experience and degrees from top institutions who face never working again. Every major tech company is laying off. Jobs are being either eliminated come off short, outsourced, or automated.
Trying to figure out how to break into tech as a self-taught programmer can feel like a black hole, no joke. What helped me a ton early on was focusing like crazy on tailoring my resume for every job before even thinking about interviews - feels like a full-time job honestly.
One of the biggest mistakes I made was putting off projects that directly matched the postings I wanted. Make a list of 15 companies you want to work at, read actual open job descriptions, and literally build or tweak a project that plugs into their stack or main product (even if it's MVP quality). I did this for a health-tech startup and that project got most of my interviews - not my bigger, older open-source stuff. It's wild how much recruiters respond to something that almost mirrors what they want day-to-day, even if it's smaller than your other work.
Networking can work too, but if you're socially awkward like me, just cold DM ex-employees or current juniors from your target list and ask super specific questions. 90% will ignore, but sometimes you get that 10% who'll give you gold intel or even refer you in.
On the resume side, before I got any traction, I started using stuff like Resume Worded, ResumeJudge, and Jobscan to scan my resume against each job I applied for. Sometimes you're missing the dumbest keyword or your formatting gets wrecked by the ATS. It's all trial/error honestly, so if you ever want feedback on your project descriptions or need a set of eyes on your bullet points, just shoot me a message.
