Move to Texas! I'm a teacher making 73K and my 4BR 2bath house is $1900 month. Cost of living is much better down south. And the weather is better!
And you can get a roommate!
That is such a great conundrum. Your rent sounds high- that’s the same as my mortgage in a nice suburban house in Illinois. At the same time, my daughter’s rent, in Wrigleyville, is as much as my mortgage. If you utilize the area and it’s worth it- than it’s worth it. If living there makes you worry about money, than live within your means. It’s all about balance

Indiana is pretty cheap if you're open to the midwest! There are a lot of things I don't love about my state, but COL isn't one of them. Life is actually semi-affordable here.
I have been a para at a small school for 7 years. I make $15.51 an hour, if we aren’t in school I don’t get paid, I don’t even make enough in my county for them to take takes out of my check. I have additional withholding so I don’t have to pay. I grossed $16,500 last year. My house payment is $1,000 and I have a 1200 sq ft 3 br 1.5 ba house. We do have an in-laws sweet and 80x20 shop behind us, but we can’t make any money off it when our family lives there. I hate Indiana but my husband won’t move. I’m disgusted with what is allowed in our school system and it’s so frustrating the way they allow our students to talk to us. I couldn’t work here if my husband made any less. We average $108k depending on the overtime at his factory. We have to adult kids (18-20) and I’m so tired of the poor pay and disrespect. I would NOT recommend Indiana. Our entire school is a joke. They just pass kids, they can come to 11th grade and have 4 credits and graduate early with 40. It’s just unbelievable.
We max out in our district at $55K
I just got my paychek in the bank account it seem that every months I make less I work Full-Timee in a head start program, my paychek last month not even scratched 1000, and this month didn't even scratch it $700 ( I am already looking for another job in the same industry, but that paid few dollars more
In NJ you cannot live on that unless you have 2 roommates or married with two incomes each over 100k.
