I’m a woman who just stepped into an Executive Chef role (first one in my group) and I can already feel the unspoken expectations. Some staff look at me like I need to be a hard-ass to earn respect, others clearly expect me to play “kitchen mom” and smooth everything over. I don’t want to perform someone else’s idea of leadership just to make people comfortable. How do you stay true to your leadership style without getting boxed into a stereotype?

They’ll box you in no matter what, so don’t waste energy trying to please. Lead with clarity, demand excellence, and let your results speak louder than the labels. And when they call you “bossy,” correct them: That’s Executive Chef to you.

Haha nice one! I would use that too! 😂

For lack of better words, you just do it. They can reevaluate and manage their expectations when they see how you operate. Congrats on the role! Now, just make it your own and don’t let others' ideas stand in your way.

I think a critical aspect of leadership is simply doing what you're going to do and letting people deal with the consequences. Some will dislike it, while others will love it. It doesn't really matter. At the end of the day, you were the one hired as the leader, not them.

I am booked at an agency that is filled with toxic people and I got offered a freelance job at a really great agency. I am two weeks into a four week booking but they said that usually keep freelancers on for a really long time. Right now I am only working on edits. Do you all think it would be OK to tell the agency that I’m currently at that I’m going to leave for another booking or is that really bad?

I had quite the day the other day. Coustmer comes in and then ends up leaving with a grossed out look on his face just for him to put in a complaint about my appearance...he down right called me some nasty things for no reason. So I work as an assistant manager at a restaurant for the past 9 months. I've worked in restaurants for the past 6 years science I was 16. Now I'm 22. I went to a trade school for media and film. I got a dream opportunity to work in the field making about the same or 10% more. I told myself the only reason I'd leave this company is for this type of job. Should I take the chance at this job and leave the restaurant that is on the rise and growing?
