I’m an elevator mechanic transitioning into infrastructure and product security engineering. Over the past decade I’ve worked in safety critical, regulated environments and recently built and operated secure cloud and zero trust systems using VPS infrastructure, WireGuard, hardware backed MFA, and applied cryptography.
For engineers who’ve made a similar transition from industrial or field systems into infrastructure or security roles, what helped most during hiring and interviews?

Take that field experience and translate it into security outcomes. In interviews, make sure you have stories that show that skill in action and how it fits this new job description.

That is putting yourself in a great position! Everything breaks or goes wrong eventually, and showing you have clear problem-solving skills is good.

Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

I'm a SWE from Italy. Love my country but salary and taxes here are outrageous. Got 2yrs experience in fullstack and data science, 2masters, a peer reviewed paper and outperform all my peers for 24k€ a year.
I'm thinkin about landing a remote SWE job (leetcoding and building a portfolio this summer).
Have you got some advice? Is it possible to work for US remotely without visa? What other countries pay well? Is it possible to land a 100k$+ with this kind of experience and working from Italy?

I just got a job offer for an Entry Level Software Engineer at Boeing in Saint Louis. The salary is $82,000 with an $8,000 sign on bonus. I was hoping for an offer closer to 90k base and I don’t care too much for a sign on bonus. However, this is a lot more than what I’m making now, and would be my first SWE job. Should I counter? If so, how would I go about doing that? Thanks!
