Nope, same thing in tech. Excelling at your job just gets you more work without any real increase in pay
I suspect that can happen anywhere. Sometimes you get a promotion in name only. And sometimes you don't even get the inflated title, you just get handed more work. It's annoying, but as you note, quite correctly, it also seems to create some job security.
In my personal experience, Tech in Silicon Valley still enjoys 5-7% raise and 10-15% bonuses (much lower than before). Many of us put in 50-60 hour week and this comp is baked in the stressful long hours.
5-7%?
Damn, last three years I’ve been 0%, 2%, and 0%. This past year it was 0% for L6 and above. L5 and below was 4%.
I’m not complaining, though. Extra equity grants more than make up for it.
Keep going. If you want to climb the ladder you have to nearly constantly operate at the next level. Doesn’t mean you’ll be immediately promoted.
Or choose not to and you won’t get promoted. Either way is fine.
This happens everywhere as far as I can tell. We're all feeling the pressure to give 110% because of AI-related layoffs. It still pays off, I guess, it's just that the payoff right now is remaining employed and continuing to get that same paycheck, instead of a title change and a big salary hike.
