This is such a real problem. I’ve seen brilliant system thinkers struggle with Leetcode-style questions while excelling in architecture whiteboards. How are you adjusting vetting methods for folks with unconventional resumes or project-based experience?
System design sessions! I've found that choosing the right visual collaboration tool and preparing scenarios to go through with the candidate help a lot. That's usually a different part of the tech interview compared to the coding assessment. I find it also more difficult to fake as you need to talk through it and evaluate trade-offs, possibly with real life examples or experiences that support your take.
I look beyond the code. For AI-native roles, we focus on problem framing, data thinking, and how they handle trade-offs in models and systems. Architecture discussions, past project walk-throughs, and scenario-based questions tell us more than standard assessments ever could.
