I’m heading to Europe in September, and I’m considering booking an Airbnb since hotel options are pretty limited in some of the places I’m visiting. I’ve had a mix of experiences with Airbnb in the past in the U.S. Some were amazing while some a little unpredictable. For those of you who’ve traveled to Europe, do you usually go with Airbnb or hotels? Any tips or stories to share?

I've almost always gone with airbnbs, even though I agree it is risky. Just go to places with a lot of solid reviews and get information on the beds before booking if you can. I went to Spain last year and the airbnbs we stayed at were actually amazing

Thanks for sharing! That’s reassuring to hear. Good tip on checking the beds - definitely something I’ll look out for!

Definitely read reviews
I’m about to go to Europe and will stay in 1 hotel and 2 airbnbs

Thanks! Sounds like you have a good mix. Sometimes it’s nice to have a hotel for a bit more structure, and then Airbnbs for the local vibe.

I always stay at Airbnbs when I travel abroad. It's worked out great for us so far. Be sure to read the reviews and pay special attention to the one's that mention location. I've been close to booking places that have been highly rated but really inconveniently located, and I only realized it after seeing a few reviews mention the fact and plugging in the address to Google Maps.

That's really helpful, thank you! I’ve had similar concerns about location, so I’ll definitely double-check that before booking. Reviews can be a lifesaver for sure!

Which country / countries in Europe are you going to?! Totally varies from country to country. I live in England and Air BnB is really popular, but I know in places like Spain and France it’s a bit more difficult

I’m planning to visit a few places - Italy, France, and maybe Portugal. I’ve heard mixed things about Airbnb in those spots too, so I’m trying to do my homework. Good to know it’s smoother in England!

I just did two different VRBO’s in Greece + a boutique hotel and they were both great! At the end of the day, you’re more likely to be reimbursed by Air BnB if something goes wrong than by a boutique hotel in a country where you don’t speak the language. We had no issues with any of the places though and I’d do either one in the future.

That’s super helpful, thank you! I’ve been leaning toward Airbnb for the same reason: at least there's a bit of a safety net if something goes wrong. Good to hear you had a smooth experience in Greece! Did you feel like one had better value or convenience than the other?

I have contacts in Deloitte US but that doesn’t seem to apply for CA!
