Can you give some examples of the things going poorly that you are being found at fault for versus things going well the manager is commended for?

Yeah I’m sure there’s no way anyone else has experienced something similar and things like not producing deliverables on time is soooo unique everyone would immediately know that Jessica made this post!
I'm so sorry that you're going through this, OP. Hope you receive some good advice here.
This is not an easy one. Technically it is your fault if something goes wrong but you should get credit too if something goes right. I think this warrants more investigation. Are you having check ins with the Director one on one to talk about your great work? Or only with the Manager? Your Manager could be blaming you behind the scenes. Or portraying that they are more involved than they really are. Other questios: Do you feel valued? Are you aiming for promotion? Do you feel supported? If not and you are sharing your contributions to the Director, then all signs say that its not a good long term option. Plan to exit the project and join a different one. Be strategic. No one wants to be exploited.
He should be shitting on the manager not you
Unfortunately, as long as you’re working with this manager, this is likely to be how things will go. In my experience, good managers will throw the credit back to you when they get commended for something you did/lead. I’m on a team where both my manager and senior manager do this.
I was an MD in your shop for over a decade. I would offer up that the engagement partner knows exactly what’s going on. Anyway… why is the manager not leading? Why are you stepping out of your role? These expectations should be leveled before you start work. That said, sounds like you have some great stuff to check the box on the capabilities you need to demonstrate to move up. Make sure you document it in your review. I would remember that a project is an ebb and flow… don’t be hypervigilant about your own perceived success and failure on an hour by hour basis. In the meantime, if it’s untenable have a frank yet constructive discussion with the director. Maybe your perception is not their reality. Whatever you do… don’t do nothing.
