A mentor l of mine once told me “You think your career is going to be always climbing the ladder. Most people’s careers are more like jungle gyms.” Going back to an IC role wouldn’t be the end of the world. I did it once in my career… but I also think that with 1.5 years of experience leading teams there are other people leader roles out there you should be qualified for.
Not sure who the originator of that is, but I did read the Career is being like a jungle gems in Sheryl Sandberg’s lean in book several years ago. I distinctively remember that quote because I’ve used it myself, and it helped me during a time when I had to take entry-level roles to pursue a different career path.
You are a people leader. Keep leading. 👍 And when it's time for a new role if you want to be a people leader then go for those roles. Ignore ideal time in seat and focus on what you have accomplished.
You can always frame it as indirectly or dotted-line managing people
