I'm in salary negotiations for a marketing role, and my girlfriend keeps telling me to just be grateful for the offer because of this job market. The offer is 15% below the market rate, and I don't want to come across as ungrateful. But I don't think it would hurt to negotiate. What do you think - is my girlfriend right about just accepting the offer?

Always negotiate, worst is they say no and just make sure you can either walk away or settle with it. If the company pulls back the offer because you tried to negotiate, that’s also a red flag of a place where you don’t want to work for.

Here’s my perspective - if you have gone through the process and pass the interviews for them to now make you an offer, that means you are already top of their candidate. Negotiate is expected at this point at any places. They might have another candidate that’s slightly under-qualified(maybe or maybe not), in theory, if they in fact truly cannot have rooms for extra $$ , they will tell you that. If they decided to move on to the back up candidate and not even say a simple word “no” to you, evaluate yourself how much they value you and your background, and do they know who they want to hire or just find someone who’s cheaper to do the work and check the boxes. These are things I’d evaluate this company whether I’d want to work for if I’m not looking to jump right away(also, if you really just away to get out your current, that’s different). People take jobs for so many reason too.

I'm with your girlfriend on this one. Normally I would say always negotiate, but things are riskier right now. Companies have so many great candidates to choose from that they are more likely to rescind the offer.

Negotiate. Companies should be paying the market rate regardless of economic pressures. If they can’t afford to then that’s a red flag.

Don't listen to her. As long as you're professional, respectful, and reasonable when you make your counter, there shouldn't be any risk. There's a chance they'll tell you there's no room for negotiation, and if that's the case, you'll be in the same exact position you are now.

like

I would just take the offer with the market the way it is..

You are both right. It is a very tough market. But if you negotiate right and with diplomacy, they will respect you, and you shouldn't lose the offer. Worth a try. Just be a diplomatic and ask if there is room to push toward $X salary and see what they say.

Research shows that women are very bad at job negotiations because they don't want to offend the other party. They often don't even negotiate. Don't listen to her and try at least 1 round of negotiations.

How are you determining market rate?

Your GF is not wrong. Collect a check and be glad you have a GF instead of a misandrist harpy like I do.

Also compare benefits, which can easily be +/- 40k/year. Look at the whole package.

Nothing stops you from continuing to look for more comp, a job that doesn’t make you use Teams or MS-DOS, etc.

I think it’s always worth it to negotiate! Regardless of market

I cleared technical round and during final call with HR, my salary expectations were higher as per HR.

My current CTC is 9lpa, skill-IAM and Java, YOE-3. I asked for 14lpa, best they could give was 11lpa. I know I asked a lot.

She didn't care to negotiate and cut my call and now they put my candidature on hold. Can I expect call back? Or i can consider myself rejected?

For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?
