I’m leaving the practice of law but want to keep my license active just in case. NY Bar publishes our home address if we don’t list a business address. I have an expired restraining order against someone who will be released from prison in a few years and am scared to have my info listed. I don’t yet have a job lined up and don’t want to pay for a PO Box. Anyone get around this publishing issue?

PO Boxes are $5/month. Just get one. CA does the same thing.

like

Why not just keep your employer's address? Yes, you aren't practicing but the address serves the same purpose.

like

Oh! Then get a PO box until you get a new job

[EDIT] Does anyone know if NY allows PO Boxes for the required home address? I’m not seeing a rule that explicitly says no and have emailed but their auto reply suggests there is a delay in responses.

A1 is on to something. I used to represent survivors of domestic violence and there are almost always exceptions both practically and legally for those in your position. Look into whether NY has programs for maintaining a persons residence confidential in all official docs and for all official purposes. I can’t remember what it’s was called but CA has something like that whereby your address is retained on some government protected database and you get this generic address instead. Can’t remember all details but it was very helpful to my former clients.

Additional Posts in Law Exit Opportunities

I’ve been practicing in both big law (many yrs ago) and now in-house for over 10 years. Quite often I struggle because I don’t find work fulfilling. I’ve been in industries that allegedly have greater cause (healthcare) but was eventually disappointed by the corporate bureaucracy and went to a cutting-edge tech company for intellectual stimulation. Still I struggle. Should I try public interest? Not that I don’t need the money but it’s hard to work when I am so detached and find it meaningless
