In my opinion, hiring is a pretty key business activity. The wrong team member can be an expensive error to fix and can impact the whole team negatively. That’s a risk with any hire, but certainly more risky if you let HR “just handle it.”
I would meet with finalists with no hesitations whatsoever. A few hours of time to ask the right questions is worth it in the long run.
Well sure, they are right.. you ARE on mat leave so it’s ultimately your decision and certainly not required of you. When I was on mat leave the executive team did a major team re-org. They gave me the option to advise the thinking before big announcements were made. I’m glad they reached out to me about it while I was on leave so I could advocate/represent what was best for my team. I couldn’t have made the same changes I recommended had I waited until I got back to guide it. I don’t regret it one bit and still got my fill of baby snuggles. 💕
So much can and will change in seven months. It seems appropriate to let your team run this.
I’m not planning on doing anything except zoom meeting with maybe the 2-3 finalists (based on my team doing initial vetting) and weighing my opinion accordingly with advice from my team. HR would then handle negotiations. Is that crazy? I just feel like i would want to know who I’d be working with and if it was me interviewing I’d like to know who my eventual boss would be too....
With 7 months leave left, I'd expect you have someone covering for you and would trust your team to do the actual work here. But, If I were interviewing, I'd want a chance to talk to my potential new boss and ask questions directly of them, even if they wouldn't be my boss for several more months, though I'd understand if it weren't possible due to leave and would try to get a good sense from other interviews. While I think it's best to set the expectation that you're on full leave and not working, this is one case where I could see an exception for a quick meeting of 1-2 candidates.
I did this when I was on leave with both of my kids. I trusted them to bring me the top 2 finalists and I asked to be able to make the final decision. If the role is important, I 100% would. If it’s a junior role however reporting into someone else, pass.
Is this someone you’ll be working closely with or a junior who’s multiple levels below you? If the former interview them. If the latter, let your team enjoy and grow from this opportunity for autonomy
It’s clearly your choice, but as others have said it’s a wonderful chance for autonomy for your team to feel in control while you’re out. If I were reporting into you, I would find your involvement a little confusing. I wouldn’t have done it personally bc I found so much joy in turning off for a while.I get so few chances to focus just on my kiddos in this life.
