I'm friendly with people at work, but in my career there have only been a few times when I've become friends with someone at work. And I never planned on it happening, it just happened. If you develop a rapport with someone, and bond over whatever you're interested in, it will happen. There's no point in trying to force it, and there's no point in feeling like something's missing if it doesn't happen.
Give it time. Unless you’ve been there for a year, work relationships take a bit for folks to understand how to approach others. Those that have each others social media may have taken a bit to get to that level of engagement with each other. Last hospital I worked at, it took a solid 6 weeks before people would even engage with me outside of work-related info.
Don’t force it! It usually happens naturally!
You don’t have to make friends at work, but I get where you’re coming from. I just have genuine conversations and ask people about their lives. Before you know it, you’ve made friends without even realizing it.
It’s possible to make good friends without connecting on social media. I just left my job and I have one person I am keeping in touch with and we plan on meeting when I am all settled in with my new job.
