If you're not even getting called when you have "nearly identical skills", there might be something in your resume that is off-putting. I would suggest you ask someone to read over your resume and validate that there is nothing that could be misread as questionable. It can't hurt to get an independent view. Good luck!
My personal opinion is other candidates may know someone in the company. I’ve never had that luck
I wouldn't rule out timing and luck, that can always play a part. Some people may have gotten their application in as soon as the listing went live. Other people may have submitted too late to be in the running. And there can also be any number of factors at work. Saying people have "nearly identical skills and backgrounds" skips over a reality, which is that hiring managers are looking at things with an experienced eye. Seeing someone worked someplace, or attended a specific college, or did some specific type of work could lead to them being considered right away. Unless we know what a hiring manager is focusing on it can all look quite mysterious.
Or there is just one spot ….whichever you pick, the other was passed over
I'd like to say that the hiring and evaluation process is completely fair and neutral, but sometimes things are a little bit more arbitrary than a lot of people want to admit. Sometimes I just see one candidate before another, or they answer the phone faster, or their résumé was easier to read… Sometimes it's just as much about how you present yourself and a little bit of luck as it is your education, experience, and skill.
I agree with Parter 1. Here are my top most common issues with resumes:
Poor formatting:
Poor formatting shows me a person did not value the presentation of their work.
More than one page:
Too long of a resume shows me they over think things and/or think too highly of themselves.
Irrelevant information:
This shows that they either do not have the required skills or they do not know how to present that they do have the skills.
I think they want to see who puckers up best lol
