I'm starting at a startup in their finance team in a couple weeks and heard that finance in startups can be very disorganized, eg., reporting functions are not mature, thousands of rows of AP/AR data in an excel with weird formatting, need to speak to tons of teams to get the right data etc. etc. Anyone have any advice and tips to navigate this kind of environment? What would help me add value and catch up to speed? Context is I'll be joining as one level below a Finance Manager.

Most start ups will have 1-3 “finance managers”, “VP finance”, “VP accounting” or similar

The key to being successful is having a CEO who is supportive of you and allows you to set guidelines and requirements for other teams rather than expecting you to make sense of their individual systems and quickbooks entries

Thanks. I'm assuming it is somewhat on the finance managers to push for these standards or that they have already done so? Or else I would need to constantly push the cross functional people to get the data in the way I want / spend hours trying to understand their exported data. I'm a bit wary that this part of the job will get really tiring and unfulfilling. I have no gauge on how sophisticatedly their finance function is running...

Every startup before Series D will be very disorganized. It’s only pre ipo time that the company will hire enough accountants to manage the filings and business. I have friends who move to startup to startup for pre ipo readiness and they clear $1-3m over the 2-3 years at each firm.

like

They only join series D or E which means imminent IPO. So it’s a guarantee payout but the amount varies and $1m is probably closer to the average. I know two who joined Reddit recently, so let’s see how that goes.

Focusing on what you were hired to do and get it done. You will be pulled in many directions and asked to do different jobs that are unrelated to your core responsibilities. When you fail because of the lack of focus, the CEO will blame you. So remember to focus!

I realized a slow pace at work is really bad for me. A couple years ago I was experiencing burn out from my fast paced job supporting transactions, and believed by moving to a slower job in a lower cost area, I would be sailing off to the sunset. Wrong, I spend weeks following up with other teams, often times they forgot what we discussed, so I spent 50% if the time reminding them of the topics and next steps. I spend most of my time writing memos no one will read.
