Best is to just keep applying and figure out way to keep beffing up the resume. If you are anywhere near the recent storm that moved up the east coast, FEMA will be doing local hiring blitz. They are full-time temp (not to exceed a year and a half) positions, but great to get your foot in the door. FEMA also has Reservist positions that get sent to events when called up.
I was unemployed for about a year back in 2013 (took an internship with a county to stay busy and learn) before getting picked up by FEMA as a local hire, now I am a full-time supervisory 13 for a region.
My best guess is try to get ahold of the hiring managers for the jobs that you applied. Ask them if they have any feedback on the candidates that went forward and see where your skills may be lacking or not highlighted. Make sure that you tailor your resume to every job ad, which is one of the hardest things to do when your time is already stretched. Find time for yourself and find time to improve your skills and make yourself more marketable. Lastly, networking. It’s a big deal! Good luck!
You might want to relocate if there is no work in your local area. Apply for work in another city. How many applications do you put out per week?? double triple that number. Harass employers for work and never give up.
I hear you! I have been sitting at my laptop for three hours with a cold cup of coffee searching every site I can think of.
Possibly try working within the Temp or staffing agency that will get you noticed and will give you some income all while improving your tech writing skills.
At the end of the day, companies are posting jobs to keep their pipelines full, but they are not fully through budgets and are not getting approvals to make the hires (minus a few scenarios). So, they are wasting a lot of your time. Always check the website to ensure the job is actually posted there, too, before you apply.
Government is hiring like crazy, GSA, IRS, OPM, usajobs.gov format your federal resume.
Federal Agencies are hiring, but mostly for open high priority positions (mini-freeze right now for some that have run over budget in FY2024. Now that the budget clock is reset and for Federal Employers, a stopgap appropriations bill to keep the lights on was signed recently, the hiring situation could change for you. I suggest that you explore altering the job title in your search strategy
