In government work, I’ve always felt a strong connection to the mission—serving the public, making systems better, helping communities. But honestly, the bureaucracy can be exhausting. Endless layers of approval, conflicting priorities, and slow progress sometimes make me feel like I’m shouting into the void. I don’t want to lose that sense of purpose, but it’s hard to stay energized. How do you stay motivated in your public service role when the red tape starts to wear you down?

I remind myself that even small wins matter—changing one process, helping one person, moving one project forward. I also lean on coworkers who believe in the work and share the same values. Purpose and people keep me grounded when the system feels heavy.

I'll typically remind myself that the red tape exists for a reason. Just as much as the government is in service to the public, it is also accountable to the public, and lots of the tedious practices were developed over multiple lifespans by trial and error as well as legislation. Some of it may be outdated or excessive, but ultimately every government body was shaped overtime and it's a case of getting used to this fact.

I've had some ideas of mine that were held up and there were legitimate reasons for the bureaucratic process whether it was prioritizing government-wide matters (usually of a financial nature) or there was some attempt that had greater consequences than intended (sometimes the best intentions for serving the public may not always be handled well by the public, especially if there are members of the public who are keen to take advantage of any loopholes).

As long as my day-to-day operation is maintaining steady or slowly improving, I'll count that as progress even if I believe more could be done that'll get held up in the system (and does).

So many things move slower than molasses as my grandma would say! Really have to step back and look at the big picture all the time. Instant results would probably mean a lot more mistakes. At least when things do finally happen it is with a lot of thought and green lights to it.

The timelines that stretch on forever can be very frustrating. But I've always got a lot of projects in the works, so in a strange way it doesn't matter when one seems stalled. Invariably, something else is very active. And eventually they mostly get to completion. It's just a different way of looking at it, I guess. And in a general sense, it's gratifying to know that even if something seemed to take forever, it does make a difference in people's lives once it's completed.

Might you be able to provide suggestions to leadership on solutions to speed up implementation. I try to share feedback with the following model: Fact, Impact, Solution. Fact: what is currently happening. Impact: Ramifications that this has to the work we do (include tangibles if possible). Solution: Ideas for improvement.

When sharing feedback, most people complain. Don't complain, offer ideas to improve. Government doesn't have to be slow, doesn't have to be inefficient. Come work for the Town of Gilbert and see government working better!

Hi fishes,

I received offer from two companies, MPHASIS(in Hyderabad) and Optimum Info System(as Cosultant for Shell India in Banglore). Optimum Info System offered 2.5L more CTC than Mphasis and ROLE is the same.

Which one would you opt considering that Mphasis is a bigger company(terms of employee count) than either Optimum Info System or Shell ?.

Which is a better company ?

I'm in the final round of interviews for two internal positions - both vertical. One has FTE's (my first such experience) and the other a much broader scope vs my current role

I had interviewed externally for a role on par w the internal roles, at a smaller and less established company. They confirmed +20% was in their range

How do I push back on my company if they offer less than that, if I do want one of those roles? Without a pay scale, what is the best way to approach?

Hello, I recently was reached out to by an in-house recruiter at a similar but slightly different company than the one I currently work for. The recruiter provided a base range and an OTE range. The lower end of that range is what I am currently making. The higher end of that range is almost 200k more than my current comp. The role is almost identical. I wasn’t looking to move, but that higher end range would set my family up very nicely for our goals. But I am happy at my current company. Help?
