Perhaps request the Property Condition Disclosure Statement from the realtor.
While it is not REQUIRED until right before the signing the sales contract, I routinely ask for/offer the statement as early as possible. Why waste time looking at a property that does not suit your needs?

If it’s in a village or town you should be able to get the file from the building dept. It would show open permits so you can figure out which CO was not issued.
There should be a lot of information about the house at the Nassau County Courthouse. Other resources could be found with the aid of a researcher.

If you plan to buy title insurance just get a commitment
Just an FYI if the house was built before a certain date that the town issued COs (say the 1950s as some point), it may not have a CO. The town should issue a pre-date letter. This is something your title company should know and/or you can investigate at town hall.
