Interviewed internally for a promotion role recently and it didn’t go well. It’s been 3 weeks and I haven’t heard back. I know it’s going to be bad news, but any tips for navigating the conversation? How many times should you try internally before giving up?

Could you reach out for some feedback on the interview? That is what I would do.

Thanks! I was weary to do so, so early but this helped!

You can try to reach out to the recruiter to see if you can get some feedback from the hiring manger,

I have been trying for an internal promotion for a good 12-18 months now without much success.

And a few months ago I started looking outside my company to see what is out there that I would be interested in. Since I am employed full-time, I can be picky about which roles I apply for.

Thank you! I decided to reach out for an update and I did get it!! Keep hope trying internally and maybe it’ll work out for you too!

If you don’t see that role being filled yet, it may have been held up. I had a similar experience and had written it off, only to get a random meeting request congratulating me for getting the role. They did apologize for the time, but other things came up that caused a delay.

It was honestly 2 months after I had interviewed. Internally, they should provide you with some reasoning for not getting the job and it wouldn’t just be solely on a not great interview.

If you there is an HR person involved, I would reach out to them first. Or as someone else said, if the position is filled, I would follow-up and ask for constructive criticism for what you need to better next time you go in for an interview, etc.

Happy Update: Exact same thing happened to me and I just got the news that I did get it! 😅 I decided to just follow up and there had been delays in the process. I’ll never really know but super excited. Turns out I just need to be less critical of myself 😂
