I am Privacy Officer for the U.S. and Canada despite not being a privacy attorney. I figure it out. At this point in my career I’m getting senior enough to either handle things or know to go to outside counsel.

This. The key is being good enough for most of it but being humble enough to know when you need help.

It’s all good, I don’t have a license in “knowing all the things”; my license is in “figuring it out.”

Yes. It's pretty easy once you have a couple years under your belt. What's your concern or issue?

yeah that happens when you jump biglaw too early, you basically get way more responsibility, for less pay, more unpredictable hours and less resources , especially at a startup

Wait until you’re asked to deal with everyday employment issues

What are your thoughts on the Scrum Master role? I’ve worked with a few now and out of 5 of them, only 1 seemed to be of any help. Most of the time we have to explain every detail multiple times and they still don’t understand what we’re doing. I feel that the role should be reserved for employees with experience in the systems they work in.

Anyone here made the move from a boutique ECVC firm to in house at a VC? My Y1/Y2 background was V20 ECVC hard hitting firm in the Bay, and now I’m at a large boutique with a strong rep in this field in So Cal. I don’t want to make partner, so I’m exploring what options there may be to go in house with an ECVC background. Any insight on responsibilities, W/L balance, leadership, etc in these in house roles?

FWIW, I’m a JD/MBA with a background in finance.

If you practice collections in-house, what do you earn and do you receive a bonus?

I have practiced for five years and make $121k as an employee of a financial services company. As the only attorney, I oversee all statewide collections efforts, from demand letter to garnishment, with a case volume of nearly 7k new cases per year, of which the majority I end up litigating. I receive only a $1k bonus per year. Is my compensation fair? My last insurance defense gig was $75k.
