I applied for a job within my unit that I do not qualify for. Now, I have an interview for this job. You are important to the project, but never so important that you cannot leave the project or firm for better opportunities. Being in hero mode is good where you save the day, everyday - but in fact that is neither advisable for your progression nor a recommended practice for the firm. If you have been performing and have had decent social skills, you will not have burnt a bridge when you leave.
