Is it just me or has busy season not been that bad anymore? Early in my career I use to work 60+ hours regularly, but I’m hardly seeing that anymore - what’re you guys/girls seeing in your practices?

Yes but only because I stopped caring

It feels like firms are finally figuring out better workflows (or maybe we’re just getting more efficient). I remember those brutal 60+ hour weeks too, but lately, it’s been way more manageable. Still busy, just not soul-crushing like it used to be. I'm grateful for it for sure

like

It depends. My 9/15 was brutal last year, but I’m coasting into 4/15 right now.

65 to 70 hours from 2/1 to 3/31 then 50 to 55 in April (I am in audit)

Stayed pretty consistent hours wise where I’m at. We have taken on significantly more clients and have about the same amount of staff so I suppose we have gotten more efficient. Since Covid more people have been ok with extensions so it has really just meant less down time in the summer.

Bruh wtf people teach me the ways. What firms are you guys at?

I literally charged 95 this week because of tax K1 season, no idea what you’re talking about 🥲

like

It’s not normal… Do you have the same list each year? I am busier each year regards the client’s list getting longer, but since I am familiar with them. I am also processing it faster. It’s also a quieter year in regards of tax law change… surprisingly trump didn’t make any retro change. Knock on the woods!!

Yeah!! Okay I thought it was strange this season

I’m steady 50 in spring and 60-80 max in the fall. Used to be a lot worse

I'm in audit and it's definitely not as busy as prior years. We've hit our first lull of the season but should pick back up later in April. The tax department is still hectic but people are heading home at a decent hour.

At my firm, our oversees staff have gotten a lot better, that’s reduced my load quite a bit. I no longer have to redo staff work as much as I have in the past.

Same BTS IM senior- I have like 2-3 weeks I work over 60 in a year but I work 55 during busy season and pretty chill outside of busy season. Still hitting billable hr goal(1850)

You can file for free on the IRS site now. At H&R block only people who get stuck doing their taxes on Turbo tax come in a lot to find answers to their questions. A lot of people are doing it themselves. The younger people are all tech savvy and they google it for answers!

Can anyone help me wrap my head around this post Series C start-up equity offer? It’s an IP director position, the the base is $170 with 10% bonus (both lower than I was expecting). There’s also an equity component: 0.15% of current fully diluted equity. This equates to about 30000 shares at a strike price of $2. They also indicate the preferred stock price is $6 and preferred stock equity is $188k (whatever that means). They are in the middle of a new financing and valuation round.

Considering joining a small 50-person company as the only attorney (prior attorney is retiring). (I am currently in-house at a F50). For others who have done the same path, what surprises did you have when moving from a large company to a small one?

For example, it sounds like I should not expect a document management system, based on a prior post in this bowl. I’m guessing expenses like state bar fees and cell phone are not reimbursed.

Any advice on things to expect (or not expect)?

Currently working on a three person team in a larger GC group. I lateraled from a different group that did not pay attorneys on an attorney scale. I’m stuck in my old pay scale but have gotten promotions and raises quickly with more on the horizon. A recruiter reached out with a new role for 2-2.5x more than I currently make doing something similar. I love my company and the people I work with but the money isn’t there. Is it worth trying to get a counter to stay if I get the bigger offer?
