Is it less work /$ onboarding a former associate rather than a completely new hire? Are there any pros to rehiring from a biglaw perspective? I'd like to leave my v10 now and come back when my kids are a little older. i'm just... drowning.

You’re leaving practice for a few years, so no. If you were boomeranging back, yes.

Able to come back, probably. Guaranteed or even likely it would be easy, you wouldn’t have major hindrances to your career progress (if important), things wouldn’t have changed in various ways, or whatever? No. But in that kind of situation you seem to be describing, it certainly can be done, at the very least getting hired somewhere else in legit biglaw since you are at a V10. We have people come back all the time at my V30 but it usually is when they went in-house and it wasn’t all they dreamt of or something similar, not just being totally out of the game. A few years can be an eternity in some respects.

and what constitutes boomeranging? a few months?

like

Yes. In a few years, a majority of the people you worked with could be gone.

They know you and your work product. If you’re killing it and they like you, then hiring you is a pro over hiring some unknown. If you’re not killing it and they’re meh on you, then who knows. The more partners and trusted (by partners) seniors on your side the better. There’s slight onboarding perks for the firm as you know the people, the filing system, the time entry system etc, but that doesn’t matter much compared to your reputation (or lack thereof) as a good worker.

like

I am stretched so thin I am not killing it but I am working hard and they like me as a person. so ... toss up?

You could always try speaking to them about it. If you feel you need to leave for a few years anyway then would defo be worth a conversation to ensure the door will be held open.

I know a woman who left to be an AUSA for 2-3 years and came back and there had been so much turnover at the firm it was very hard for her to get reintegrated.

Have you considered a part time arrangement?

Hi boys & girls!

Joined a big firm (Big4) not long a go and starting to feel like I got a good grip on my current work.

I've always been very technical, so I think that the only thing I am missing now is making sales. (I really wanna make partner)

Can any seasoned lawyer share tips and materials (i.e. books) which can help?

Recent lateral junior associate in brand new practice where I'm the only associate. I'm probably going to bill 1,500 hours max this year due to being very slow and taking time off for a delayed honeymoon which I disclosed during my interview process. I have been told my work product is good, I don't turn anything down, I participate in non-billable work, I'm responsive and I always let people know I'm available to help. Do I need to be worried about getting fired for low hours?

I realized recently that I can turn my “super associate” persona at any time. I had it off during covid when my kids needed me and got a bad review. So now it’s back on. I’m responding to midnight emails (and daytime ones in under 20 minutes) and getting work done the same morning. I’m spending countless hours doing edits over edits. I actually don’t like super associate. Why do people live like this 24/7?!? 🤔

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.
